A question for each of you this morning. I hope you will respond. It would be so interesting to hear everyone's thoughts. Keep in mind the following. I cannot go into a store to buy supplies. Nothing exists here. I have to order it all on line. You may have some tips in that department as well.
Most of you are aware I came to Mexico without my art stuff. I let my entire stash go. SO ... if YOU were starting from scratch, what are the basic supplies you could not do without for multi media art? What stamps would you buy? How many? Which ones? Which inks and re inkers would you start with? Which brands. What tools do you consider an absolute 'must' to make art these days? Where would you start with paper? What/Who's paper would you buy. How much of it? Would you limit your colour range. Would you buy paper AND card stock, or just paper? Embellishments. What do you consider absolutely necessary? What can't you live without? I have been purchasing things to work with. I decided I absolutely could not be here without supplies. Joann's and ebay have been doing a brisk business. ha ha I'd like your thoughts on the matter ... THANK YOU.
Lots of banging going on today as they chipped out cement to lay water pipes which were supposed to be laid months ago. This is another long story. I didn't actually know they had not been laid, and unless certain circumstances had prevailed, I might never have been aware. However, in the end, all is well, my tinaco is back in place on the roof, the back up water system is alive and well. I know, because I saw it all with my own eyes!
Terrace and jardin railings are complete and painted. Slight adjustments have been made here and there which I had requested. A few more small fix ups still exist. Part of the railing for the main stair case arrived today. One portion didn't fit and had to be taken back to the blacksmith's shop. Hopefully the remaining two pieces will show up tomorrow. I'm hoping for the railing by Friday .... is it toooo much to hope for??
Chaos shot #1 |
Chaos shot #2. Will it ever be organized?! |
Valerie ... this shots for you. NO RAILINGS! I have been wobbling up and down these stairs with my cane ... ! I will be so happy when the railing is finally in. |
Another shot of the stairs leading into the jardin. I am very pleased with these .. I like the railing ... and it sure makes it easier for me to navigate. |
“Oh soul,
you worry too much.
You have seen your own strength.
You have seen your own beauty.
You have seen your golden wings.
Of anything less,
why do you worry?
You are in truth
the soul, of the soul, of the soul.” ~ Rumi

OMG! Going up and down those stairs with no railing! Would not have been the thing for a clumsy lump like me! But the photos are great, it will soon be the little pardadise you need and then you can reeeeeeeeeeeelax! I will mail you my thoughts on basic scrapping supplies. But your chaos isn't soooo bad - mine is nearly always worse! Perhaps I will send you a pic one day, but only when you are feeling very strong! Havea good day, and wish you lots of strength. Your Japanese book mark doll is on its way to you, too! Hugs, Valerie
I'm excited about the book mark :o) ... thanks! Can't wait to see how you make them. Looking forward to your priority list too. Thanks for dropping by, Valerie. Always a pleasure to receive your little notes.
Donna, no supplies?? What the heck is all that stuff in your studio?? And where-ever did you have it stashed before you had the studio??
For me I try to buy as little as possible and mostly use stuff I already have - I just seem to find that more rewarding. Although, unlike you, I do have a Michaels in the neighborhood and have been known to head over with the latest coupons! Mostly I've just bought lots of cheap paint, small canvases, gesso and gel medium, a brayer, etc. Not a lot of fancy supplies, but that's just me!
Oh Patty, you are so right. I wish I could be more like that. I have always had to have a 'stash' ... a substantial 'stash', so I don't have to go to the store to begin anything. Most of what I have in the studio, I have collected since I got here and stuffed it in the bodega before the studio was ready! With no place to go to get supplies here, I need the 'basics' .. and wondered what that was for the rest of you out there. Yes, we are all so different. Isn't it wonderful!
Well at least there is some progress...You studio and home even when in chaos are beautiful, I see your spirt come thru. Thanks for your kind words on my creations this week! I do appreciate it. Ill email you my list of supplies and my philosophy, if I had to start over!
take care, dearie. gerri
Oh dear...where to begin.
When I first got into rubber stamping which led to other art arenas. I started with stamps that met my passion -- oriental images and found Stonehouse Rubber Stamps. Now there are so many companies to select from.
So I'd look at the type of art that you prefer and narrow down your selection. From what I've viewed you like mixed media rather than a specific theme.
For paper....I'm a paper nut and have papers that are oriental, flowers because I love flowers, beautiful background papers and then plain cardstock to make cards. Quiet often I will purchase a pack of paper with designs that coordinate with each other. There are so many on the market that it is difficult to narrow it down to one package.
I also like napkins for backgrounds so I keep a stash handy for canvas projects.
RIBBON and embellishments are my most favorite items. I like charms, beads trinkets of all kinds which give dimension to any project.
With the new alcohol ink markers I prefer a dye ink because it doesn't smear with the markers -- Copic or Tria. Stazon does smear so I use INDIA INK BLACK.
I also have oodles of other ink pads. For embossing I use pigment ink because it stays wet longer to hold the embossing powders.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU'D LIKE TO HAVE BECAUSE I PROBABLY HAVE EXTRAS and I'd also be willing to be your shopper and mail things down that you can't find locally. I have the opportunity to use store coupons to save money on purchases. The local stores have lots of jewelry supplies and it is fun to just browse.
I forgot an all time favorite -- a Kyrlon gold leaf pen to edge cards and images. This is a must item for me.
DON'T BE BASHFUL. Crafters are known to share and on the positive side it will help me clean out an over abundance of goodies.
I bet I even have rubber stamps if you'd let me know what you are looking for.

LOVE THE CURVED STAIR RAILING!
Hugs,
Carolyn
PS Please share a picture of your Japanese book mark doll from Valerie when it arrives.
Top on my list of must haves would be Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water soluble crayons.
Thanks Patty. A few people have said that ... Think I"ll have to look into it. Thanks so much for dropping over. It is very much appreciated!
